Kyeame#65,

kasahorow at the Twi Translate Wiki Workshop

kasahorow recently participated in the Twi Translate Wiki worthshop held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana on 19 February 2022. We were approached by the Wikimedia Ghana User Group to assist with the creation of a Twi Wiki, a resource which would give people access to content written in the most common Akan dialect. This was an exciting opportunity for kasahorow, as it aligns with our mission of creating inclusion in every language. Akan, in particular, is a language that we feel passionate about as this is one of kasahorowā€™s oldest and largest dictionaries.

Kasahorowā€™s Akan Language Manager, Stephen Boateng and our Vocabulary Programming Manager, Richard Owusu Amoateng took part in the workshop. Stephen had the opportunity to present at the conference and shared kasahorowā€™s mission, our journey so far and how people can use our dictionary and newsletter resources. Following the presentations, participants broke away into groups to discuss and translate articles for the Twi Wiki.

We had a wonderful time networking with similar-minded language professionals from different backgrounds and professions, and we are excited about our new partnership with Wikimedia. We hope that we will be able to work with them again in future and participate in similar workshops for other languages and dialects, as well. We are looking forward to establishing a Fante Wikipedia and subsequently raising funds to organise workshops that will help translate contents on the Fante Wiki Platform.
